Generating nitrogen on-site is a cheaper and more dependable way to get the gas when you need it. Nitrogen is a clean and non-reactive gas and doesn’t easily mix with other things which makes it great for industries where you want to avoid problems like rust, moisture, or too much heat. It’s used in many areas – from big jobs like laser or plasma cutting, to filling tyres in mining, trucks, and everyday cars. Using nitrogen helps things run better, more safely, and more efficiently.

What is nitrogen?

As a major component of Earth’s atmosphere, making up around 78%, it  primarily exists as nitrogen gas (N₂), which is stable and non-reactive under normal conditions. This stability allows nitrogen to be widely used in the food industry to preserve freshness by displacing oxygen, which can cause food to spoil, an application known as modified atmospheric packaging (MAP). In the medical field, liquid nitrogen – cooled to extremely low temperatures – is used in cryotherapy to freeze and remove abnormal tissue.

Nitrogen is also crucial for plant growth, as it forms a key component of fertilizers. In the natural world, nitrogen is a building block of life, found in proteins, DNA and other essential molecules. Its continuous movement through the atmosphere, soil and living organisms – known as the nitrogen cycle – supports life on Earth by replenishing nutrients and maintaining the ecological balance.

Is nitrogen dangerous?

Nitrogen is an inert, ‘dead’ gas. It cannot burn or explode, and is also completely dry. In fact, nitrogen is used in most fire extinguishers. While nitrogen itself  is not inherently toxic or dangerous, as a gas, it is an asphyxiant, and is often stored under pressure. Its properties require cautious handling to prevent accidents and environmental harm, especially in liquid phase.

Can our nitrogen generators make liquid/cryogenic nitrogen?

Yes. Our typical/standard nitrogen generators produce compressed nitrogen gas on demand. This gas can be compressed and liquefied into cryogenic/liquid nitrogen, and stored in a  cryogenic bulk tank or dewar. On-site nitrogen liquefaction plants tend to be small, producing approximately 7-20 litres of liquid nitrogen per hour.

How big is a nitrogen generator and how much can it make?

A typical nitrogen generator is approximately 50cm x 30cm x 90cm or 180cm high. This excludes an air compressor or additional nitrogen storage. However, it really depends on what quantity of nitrogen the machine is built to generate. Nitralife makes custom-sized nitrogen systems  in line with a customer’s requested specification. We can build literally any size system, making any volume from 5 litres/min to many thousands of litres/min at purities up to 99.95% and 200 bar pressure.

How long does a nitrogen generator last?

Lifespan is directly connected to the quality of the compressed air feed, operating conditions and maintenance. Typical life span of the nitrogen membrane separator (the component that separates nitrogen from the compressed air feed) in reasonable conditions is approximately 10 years.

A nitrogen generator also requires periodic maintenance: an occasional pre-filter element change, every 4, 6 or 12 months, depending on operating hours. This preventative maintenance enables the customer to get maximum lifespan from their nitrogen generator.

What info do you need to size my nitrogen generator correctly?

The more information we have, the easier the job will be. Understanding the application always helps too. We generally require flow, pressure and purity required. Also, it is helpful to know if there is a compressed air supply which can be used?

Nitralife technicians are all certified compressor technicians, and  carry premium quality analytical/measuring tools such as digital inline flow meters and nitrogen purity monitors, so we are always happy to help with measuring your requirements.
